Flames keep unblemished district record, prepare for postseason
The Faith Academy of Marble Falls baseball team ended the district campaign with an undefeated record thanks to a 16-0 shutout of San Marcos Hill Country April 28 in four innings.
The Flames (8-2, 6-0) now prepare for their first game in the 2022 playoffs that will be played against Halletsville Sacred Heart at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 5, at the YMCA of the Highland Lakes, 1601 S. Water St. in Burnet. It is one game with the winner advancing to the next round because the Flames will be taking finals and will compete at the state track meet May 6-7.
“It’s another day at the ball park,” head coach Zakk Revelle said. “We were very aggressive on the base paths.”
All but one Flame was able to reach base led by senior Dylan Pipkin, who recorded a 3 RBI triple that went down the left-field line in the second inning and finished with a total of 4 RBIs. Freshman Carter Fromberg had 3 RBIs, while Mottle helped his own cause with 2 RBIs. Faith scored five runs in the first inning, four in the second inning, and seven in the fourth.
“It was another team effort,” Revelle said. “Dylan Pipkin hit the ball really well.”
Meanwhile, senior pitcher Justin Mottle threw two innings where he issued four walks, struck out five and didn’t give up a hit. Sophomore pitcher Kade Shaw threw the other two innings and gave up one hit and struck out six.
The coach said winning the district title in baseball to go with the district championships the Flames won in football, boys basketball and track and field has significance because it had not been done before on the diamond.
“For me personally while coaching baseball, this is the standard we want them to have,” he said. “For the seniors, it’s business as usual. The seniors are able to show the underclassmen this is what we train for and expect. The other goal is to win a playoff game.”
Revelle summed up the significance of what it would mean to the program to get a baseball postseason victory.
“We want to keep going with this group of seniors,” he said. “We’ve not won a playoff game in seven years. We were just wanting to win one game at a time. We looked around and said ‘we can win every game and we should win every game.’ As an athletics director, it’s a really awesome accomplishment, not just for the seniors but for those who follow them. We won every district championship we could.”
